Listen closely and you’ll hear the answer

The thing I find fascinating about animals is their unique ability to communicate, with no words. I mean literally, no words.

For those of us who understand that communication, I’m truly fascinated. This level of communication happens on a different, unexplainable plane. One where only certain people exist, and it’s a powerful, powerful plane.

It’s been a few years ago and we had enjoyed a season of watching a momma bird carefully build a nest near our outside veranda. We saw the progress, and immediately became aware of the new home which would soon be filled with some little ones and lots of activity! Having animals in our home, we also knew we needed to watch our troop to keep the tiny bird family safe.

The weeks flew by, and three babies now graced the nest. We became even more careful to watch our animals to make sure everyone stayed safe. That’s not to say there weren’t a few times the dogs got buzzed by the daddy and mommy bird, just to make a point!

So, the day came where we looked up, and it was time for flight lessons! How exciting!!! It was a beautiful spring day, so we scooted our troops inside the house, and then sat a bit away from the nest to give the momma room to do what she needed to do. As we sat enjoying the spring weather, we noticed two of the birds had successfully made their way out and were on their way to their own life.

However, one of the babes was having a hard time mastering this new skill! Momma tried and tried and tried, to no avail. I’m not quite sure if they had their own communication going, but it became clear that she believed WE were causing the problem and were too close for comfort for the little one. So just like that, she flew over, sat on the edge of a chair near us and promptly started “asking” us to move. As my husband and I watched her sitting on the chair, frantically chirping away, we immediately understood. We calmly got up, left the area, and found another chair further away. Clearly, she was now happy, and went back to work.

Within minutes the little one got it! Yep, maybe we were the problem!

Silly story, you might say? Maybe, but I still remember that day so vividly, and am so glad we were there, a front row seat (well, for a minute!) to watch nature at work, and then to confirm that we actually “heard” a conversation that happened without words, but full of meaning.

How are you in that area? Or are you the opposite… lots of words, with little meaning?

Just a thought…
